The title and subject of the poem allude to the ancient Greek idea of the colossus, which was a statue that represented a deceased person. The colossus was meant to evoke the individual's presence as well as his absence, thus creating a sense of the uncanny.

Shadow of the Colossus begins ominously. After a stunning introductory sequence, the protagonist Wander reaches a massive ornate bridge leading to a shrine, a pile of stone spires that resembles the Tower of Babel: Inside, we see that he has brought with him the lifeless body of a woman named Mono.

Sony and Bluepoint Games repackaged Shadow of the Colossus and Ico in a “High Definition” bundle for the PS3 in 2011. In addition to promoting the latter with the proper boxart for the first time in North America, the re-release gave PS3 owners a new opportunity to return to the worlds of Fumito Ueda.

Now, we’ll leave the beating “games are art” drum out of this one, since I had all last semester to convince you of that. I’ll just say that Shadow of the Colossus is a pretty, pretty game. In that opening, I’d like you to note all the camera angles, ambient noises, and especially music that all came together to create the feeling of that opening.

I’m playing Shadow of the Colossus, and I’m a bit angry. Though you, future Caleb, have it all figured out, here in the present I’m playing Shadow of the Colossus, and I, like many of its players, have questions about the game’s theme, its purpose, its mystery. But lacking answers to those questions doesn’t make me love the game any less.
